9 Facts About Guru Gobind Singh Ji
Guru Gobind Singh Ji the 10th and the last Guru of Sikhs was one of the most famous Sikh preachers. He became a leader at a Young age of 9, devoting his life to the betterment of mankind since then.

- A young leader
Born as Gobin Rai to Guru Teg Bahadur and Mata Gujri in Patna, he became the 10th Sikh Guru at the tender age of 9.
- He is a son of a martyr
He became the Sikh Guru when his father accepted martyrdom due to Mughal emperor Aurangzeb to save the Kashmiri Hindus.
- He is both a warrior and scholar
At a young age, he became fluent in the art of martial arts. Also, he was well-versed in many languages like Urdu, Hindi, Sanskrit, Persian, Gurumukhi, and Braj.
- Left his hometown to live in the hills
Anandpur Sahib was the hometown of Guru Gobind Singh ji, which is the present-day Rupnagar in Punjab. Following a scuffle with Raja Bhim Chand, he left his home and went to live in the hills- Naha, Himachal Pradesh. He went there after Mat Prakash, King of Sirmur invited him.
- A preacher in the hills
After his stint in Nahan, he went to Paonta which is a town on the banks of the river. Yamuna in South Sirmur, HP. Here he founded Paonta Sahib Gurudwara and started preaching about the principles that Sikh follows. He stayed here for three years and had a huge number of followers too.
This place is still a huge pilgrimage destination for Sikhs and other devotees.
- Born Fighter
He fought his first battle at the age of 19 against Raja Bhim Chand on September 1688. The battle ended in a day with the Guru’s victory, but thousands of warriors lost their lives.
- Khalsa founder
He is the founder of Khalsa. In 1699, March 30th, Guru Gobind Singh ji asked his followers to meet him at his hometown Anandpur Sahib. Here, he asked one volunteer to sacrifice his head for his fellow brothers.
Daya Ram was the first volunteer who went into the tent with the Guru with coming out with a bloody sword. It happened for four more times. After the last volunteer, the Guru came out with the five volunteers leaving five headless goats in the tent.
They were names as Panj Pyare meaning five beloved ones. They were first Sikhs, and their names are Himmat Rai, Bhai Daya Singh, Dharam Das, Mohkam Chand, and Sahib Chand.
- Khalsa Vanni, for a better life
In 1699, when his followers gathered in his hometown, he established the Khalsa Vani- “Waheguru ji ka Khalsa, Waheguru ji ki fateh”. He provided all his followers with the title of Sing meaning lion. At the same time, he founded the Five K’s or principles of Khalsa,
The five K’s are the principles of life that a Khalsa should follow. It includes:
Kesh Leave the hair uncut to show your acceptance to the form God wanted humans to be.
Kangha signifying cleanliness
Kara to remind a Khalsa to always be self-restraint
Kacchera A Khalsa should always wear this, so they are always ready to ride a horse-back into the battle.
Kirpan A sword for defending poor, weak, oneself, and the oppressed from the society and all castes, creeds, and religions.
- Passing his title and legacy
With the death of Aurangzeb, Guru Gobindji was no longer an enemy of the Mughals. He and the next Mughal rules, Bahadur Shah was friendly with each other. He went to name the Sikh Guru as the saint of India. But shortly, influenced by Wazir Khan, Sirhind Nawab, he attached the Sikh community.
He also sent two Pathan killers to attack Guru during his sleep at his resting place, Nanded.He was stabbed but still managed to kill one murderer, Jamshed while the other killer Beg was killed by his followers.
With his last breath, he named Guru Granth Sahib, the religious words of Sikhs and Khalsa as the next Guru for both the communities. He died on October 7, 1708.
